LAWTINA FEATURE: Karla Martinez, J.D.
It’s been a long time since we’ve done an Official Lawtina Feature!
Karla Martinez, Juris Doctor 🎓⚖️
Proud immigrant, DACA recipient, and first-generation college student raised by a single mom.
“It has taken me over a week to process the fact that I AM NOW A LAWYER! On May 22, 2022 I graduated from UC Hastings and became part of the 2% of Latinas in the legal field. I was brought from Mexico at age 4 and went from cleaning houses with my tia, working in warehouses, and being a waitress to graduating from law school. Being the first in my family to graduate from college and law school in spite of all the obstacles showed me that faith, determination, and hard work really go a long way. I learned to turn challenges into opportunities and paved a path where there was none. As a lawyer, I hope to be an asset to my community, to continue empowering others, and to serve as an example to those with similar backgrounds so they can believe they can do it too!
I couldn’t have done it without God’s blessings and the continued support of my family and close friends. Special shout out to my mom for giving me everything in her power, to my mentor Gina for inspiring me and always pushing me to do better, to my aunts for always supporting, to my cousins and siblings for loving me unconditionally even when I’m not there, and to my boyfriend for making this journey more loving and fun. Lastly, thanks to all the teachers and friends that have been there through memes, words of encouragement, and answering my panic phone calls. I love you all!
This has been a dream that at times seemed unreachable, but WE DID IT!”
Thank you for sharing your story with us and congratulations! Felicidades!!
