Featured Lawtino: Ricardo Morones Torres
Today we are featuring our first undocumented Lawtino, we are so moved by all he has accomplished! Congratulations soon-to-be counsel! Así se hace! Si se pudo!
Ricardo has earned not only a bachelors degree and a Juris Doctor, but also a master’s degree as an undocumented person. What a feat! Keep thriving! Ricardo tells us his story below:
“My name is Ricardo Morones Torres, and I am originally from Jalisco, Mexico. My parents and I illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border when I was four years-old; I am currently thirty-two years old. My parents and I have lived in the United States since we arrived.
Despite my immigration status, I became the first in my family to graduate from college. I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from California State University San Marcos in 2012. In 2016, I graduated from San Diego State University with a Masters in Public Administration. On May 18, 2019, I proudly graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law. I want to become an immigration attorney. I take the July Bar.
I want to become an immigration attorney because I want to help/defend others who share my story. I was fortunate enough to have a lot of financial help, but most of the challenges I faced were mental: fear of deportation and uncertainty about my future because of my immigration status. However, in these moments, one must confront fear and conquer the obstacles. These moments help strengthen character. My advice to the youth: fight your fears, set goals, and relentlessly work on accomplishing them until they are a reality. Do not let anyone or anything stop you.“
We know many of our community members may feel the same way as Ricardo did regarding his status. Don’t loose hope. We hope these stories give you the hope and drive to keep striving, wisdom to make your dreams happen, and the platform to relate and connect. We believe in you!
